On Teamwork and Teammates

This past week my Project Management course addressed teamwork. Last weekend we also had the PIAA Wrestling State Team Championship.

I grew up wrestling. My father was our HS coach. At that time he was in the process of building one of the best HS programs in the country.

In my senior year we were 16-2, losing dual meets to the number one team in the country (also in PA) and had a controversial loss to the number one team in New Jersey. We won our league for the ninth straight year. There were no team tournaments then, only individual tournaments with team scores.

For background, I grew up wrestling in eastern PA, my father is a Hall of Fame high school coach, and my brother coaches today. I was in HS in the 1980s and remember the Schultzs' winning gold in 1984. My father received an autographed copy of DuPont's Off the Mat book (which I threw out after the murder). I even saw the Bulgarian team mentioned in the book at an exhibition at Lehigh University.

For a few years I did radio play by play covering the high school's football and wrestling season.

My father was still coaching the wrestling team and 1997 wound up being his final season. He coached for 34 years accumulating a 468-95-7 record (83% winning percentage) in the wrestling hot-bed of the Lehigh Valley. Prior to coming to Nazareth the school never had a winning season and for 34 years while he coached they never had a losing one.

In his final ten years of coaching the team was the state runner-up 7 times and never finished outside the top five.
