Wednesday at Drupalcon Austin

on Thu, 06/05/2014 - 14:02

Wednesday was another great day at Drupalcon.

I was blown away by Erynn Petersen's opening keynote on women in Science, Engineering, and Technology. Erynn is now SVP, Engineering, Time. It gave me hope for my daughters' future careers knowing there is an advocate like Erynn out there for them.

Really, more than adovacting for women or minorities, she was advocating for building more successful teams. Really good stuff!

Of particular interest was Erynn's take on the recent release of data by Google on its employee diversity.

Tuesday at Drupalcon Austin

on Wed, 06/04/2014 - 06:40

The Keynote opened with Drupal Association President Holly Ross, speaking through a range of statistics supporting the positive aspects of the community activity and engagement.

Dries Buytaert was introduced by Blackmesh President, Eric Mandel.

At which point Dries gave a very interesting keynote based on his love of photography.

He addressed how the invention of the photo began with a long process that multiple people and many steps and over time it was reduced to the point and click, which while much simpler for the end user, had a sophisticated technology in the background.

He compared

Monday at Drupalcon Austin

on Tue, 06/03/2014 - 12:57

Yesterday was my first taste of Drupalcon. While I don't believe Monday is technically day one, it did have sessions, sprints, trainings, and summits and a good number of people where on hand.

Right off the bat I met some great people from CA in my Agile Project Management Training. Amazingly, one had met one of two colleagues here the night before taking a shuttle from the airport to the hotel, small world indeed.

Wunderroot conducted the agile training and I gained a good understanding of putting the concepts to work.

Once I return from Austin I'll create posts for each session I

Organizational Complexity

on Fri, 05/30/2014 - 01:50

Yesterday I came across a post by Nichole Kelly titled "Your Organization Isn't As Complex As You Think" on Social Media Explorer.

Kelly's base premise is that, "Complexity is just a story. And that story is a lie. We hold onto these stories with passion. We don't want to believe that we are the problem. We want some external force or factor to hold the responsibility. These are all lies. Many times complexity becomes the excuse we use to hold us back from doing something really great."

I've been thinking about complexity alot having gone through a two year project to launch a website for

BufferApps Logical Extension

on Thu, 05/22/2014 - 00:31

I'm a big fan of BufferApp. I use the free service for posting to Twitter and LinkedIn, and everything I send from BufferApp is forwarded to Evernote using IFTTT.

Yesterday, I logged-in to BufferApp and noticed that they were now offering paid subscribers, Awesome users, with the ability to have feeds in BufferApp.

So I made this post:

  1. Bufferapp adds feeds to its "Awesome" (paid) subscribers, logical development.

Thanks Ross, would love to hear your thoughts on that. :) -Patrik

Drupal for the Enterprise

on Mon, 05/19/2014 - 18:04

Today I listened to an Acquia webinar by Dries Buytaert, "Setting the Record Straight: Drupal as an Enterprise Web Content Management System."

It was great to hear them promote my upcoming webinar with Ray Saltini of Blink Reaction on June 10 (learn more here).

Overall, I thought it was a good presentation for someone considering a new solution.

Below is a summary of my notes on Dries' key points, any errors are mine.

[Fair disclosure, my company is an Acquia client, and I use Drupal both for work and personally]

"Drupal is a Unified, Open Source Platform for Content, Community, and

Speaking at My Local High School

on Thu, 05/01/2014 - 22:01

This week I spoke to two marketing classes at the high school I graduated from.

This is the second time I've done this, last semester I did it in my daughter's class and one other and was asked to come back.

I spoke to the kids about digital marketing, particularly web engagement.

The hardest part about making this presentation is having a room full of 15-18 year olds at 7:30 a.m. and dimming the lights to be able to see the Power Point slides.

I expanded the first presentation a little bit, but not by too much.

I introduced myself, gave a little background about my having moved from
